ONE MORE VICTIM OF THE DRACONIAN CFAA LAW

From the Friends and Supporters of Matthew Keys,

In March, imprisoned 30-year-old journalist Matthew Keys sent a desperate message to his followers: the Central California prison where he was housed had capriciously frozen his inmate funds. It was not clear what caused prison officials to block Mr. Keys from his money, but their decision to do so prevented Mr. Keys from purchasing phone credits and postage stamps, essentially cutting off his ability to communicate with the outside world.
At the time of the publication of this text by Carol Alfonso on May 31, Matthew Keys was still unable to communicate with close friends, family and attorneys.
Mr. Keys, a former Reuters journalist, was convicted on three felony computer crimes charges in October 2015 stemming from an indictment that claimed he assisted a computer hacker in changing the headline of a Los Angeles Times news feature. Keys, who denied the charges and maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal, was sentenced in April 2016 to two years. He began serving his sentence in August 2016, nearly four months later.
Mr. Keys’s case has been mired in controversy nearly since the day it began. In 2013, the New York Times focused on his case and that of the late Internet activist Aaron Swartz as reasons why the federal anti-computer hacking law, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act or CFAA, was in desperate need of updating.
Kim Zetter of Wired Magazine obtained files in 2016 that showed federal investigators uncovered the identity of the actual hacker in this case, but never pursued or charged them, when Zetter asked a federal official why not, their incredulous response was: “it’s kinda complicated".
Cyrus Farivar, a journalist with the website Ars Technica, has also published a report based on new evidence and a letter from a source that offered new support of Mr. Keys’s innocence. Sarah Jeong of Vice News reported prosecutors in Mr. Keys’s case over inflated monetary damages and loss figures.
